40 Rooms | Children: yes

Adrère Amellal is a nature Lodge located 16 km away from the charming town of Siwa, overlooking Lake Siwa and nestled at the foot of the White Mountains. It features 40 unique rooms that combine distinction and authenticity. Adrère Amellal has been built with indigenous materials using traditional Siwan building techniques and styles which have a minimal impact on the environment. Kershef, a mixture of sundried salt- rock mixed with clay, has been used for building walls: this earth material maintains indoor temperatures at moderate levels. Ceilings are made of olive and palm wood while doors and windows are made of olive wood. Furnishings are simple yet of the highest quality, drawing exclusively on local materials and design. Torches, wax candles and infinite stars light up the entire setting, while old style braziers warm the cool evenings.

Retreat Projects

Water & Energy

We use modern plumbing in the rooms which conveys wastewater, after a treatment, into a sealed wetland where indigenous papyrus plants are gown to complete the bio-degradation and waste reduction process. In Adrère Amellal we don’t use electricity, so natural ventilation systems that rely on strategic positioning of doors and windows have been adopted.

Organic Agriculture

Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood in Siwa, engaging most of the local families. The area is free from chemical fertilizers and untouched by herbicides and pesticides, so the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative promotes the continued use of organic farming methods and provides Siwans with the capacity to continue improving the harvesting techniques. Siwa Organic is the brand name established for local organic products.

Women & Artisanship

The Women’s Artisanship Initiative began as a community development intervention designed to increase the empowerment and economic self-sufficiency of Siwan women through the production of traditional artisanship. The project created work opportunities for women in the area and supported the making up of Siwa Creations, a product line designed to incorporate traditional Siwan embroidery styles with the fashions of today.
