Every year, some 1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 zebras and hundreds of thousands of gazelles, giraffes, elephants and other herbivores embark on a journey of more than 3,000 kilometers, driven by survival instinct and the search for pasture and water.
Guided by seasonal rains, the herds move in synchrony, following an ancestral path laid out by generations of ancestors.
The journey begins in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, where herds gather in the rainy season.
Crossing raging rivers and braving hungry predators, the herds head north, reaching the Masai Mara in Kenya between the months of July and October.
The Great Migration is a key event for the entire ecosystem.
