The growing trend of visitors wanting authentic experiences is a great incentive to preserve and enhance the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of a tourist destination.  When tourism is developed with care and respect for local customs and traditions and does not change the destination's distinctive characteristics, it can play a key role in protecting a place's identity and spreading its culture.
In addition, tourism can generate significant revenues that, if used to create partnerships with communities and local governments, can contribute to the realization of ambitious projects to enhance historical and cultural heritage.
These projects are often essential to curb depopulation of hamlets and generate employment, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.  By the term Cultural Heritage we have identified those projects implemented by Retreats that have fostered the recovery of historical heritage through the restoration of buildings, the creation of archaeological zones and opportunities to enjoy the arts, architecture, lifestyles, beliefs and traditions of the world's many cultures.
