Piovano's Laboratory

Piovano in Rome is an authentic workshop of Italian handicrafts
In one of the most charming streets in the centre of Rome, in 1973, Vincenzo Piovano set up one of the most authentic workshops of Italian craftsmanship.
Vincenzo passed on his craftsmanship to his daughters Alessandra and Michela, who created original works of art in collaboration with some of Rome's leading institutions.
Each item in the workshop is produced in full respect of tradition, using the ancient tools of the trade. Ecoluxury trusted Laboratorio Piovano for the creation of the wooden plaques carved with the names of the EcoLuxury Retreats of the World Partners with whom we exalt and support, also economically, the authenticity of local craftsmanship, in the perspective of an ongoing commitment to the custody and enhancement of territorial identity: Giving Back in Tourism.
To make the signs, the first step is the selection of the wood. Then comes production, entirely by hand using ancient working tools such as gouges and chisels. This is followed by gilding with pure gold leaf, in full respect of ancient working techniques.

The art of gold plating has a thousand-year-old tradition, created using ancient techniques and supported by the craft skills of gilders who have been handing down secrets and expertise for generations.

Gilding is a complex and laborious technique that involves five processing stages:

  • Tinting
  • Bolus laying
  • Gilding Burnishing
  • Laying of the veil

In full respect of the ancient craft of gilding, for an excellent result, all the different processing steps are respected with the exclusive use of the same natural materials that were used in ancient times.
