BIOSPHERE CONSERVATION

Coral Propagation

Sud Est Asiatico | Maldives | Maldive

In collaboration with Seamarc, a marine consulting firm, Cocoa Island has initiated a coral reef restoration project, planting new coral structures on the seafloor to encourage reef growth and regeneration. El Niño-related weather events in 1998 and 2016 caused a significant rise in temperatures in the Indian Ocean, resulting in the destruction of much of the coral and leaving many coral reefs in the Maldives bare.

Although there are still many intact coral reefs, it is crucial to restore these habitats, which are important both for the livelihood of the local economy and for the survival of a quarter of marine species.

COMO Cocoa Island

Known locally as Makunufushi, COMO Cocoa Island is a private white-sand island located in the southern atoll of Malé, accessible in just 40 minutes by speedboat from the international airport. This exclusive and romantic resort offers 33 villas overlooking turquoise waters, inspired by the curvilinear design of traditional “dhoni,” Maldivian boats, and featuring kajan roofs. Each villa has direct access to the lagoon and offers absolute privacy, ideal for couples and travelers seeking relaxation.

At the heart of the COMO Cocoa experience is the COMO Shambhala Retreat, an oasis of well-being that combines exceptional spa treatments with balanced cuisine made with organic ingredients and enriched with aromas and scents designed to rejuvenate body and spirit. The resort's restaurants offer dishes that combine local and international flavors, using fresh, organic ingredients. COMO's culinary philosophy is based on a healthy yet flavorful approach to satisfy the most discerning palates.

Being surrounded by the waters of the Indian Ocean, the activities offered by the Retreat are all deeply connected to the sea, from unforgettable diving and snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean, to evocative sunset cruises and exciting shark encounters.

COMO Cocoa also stands out for its commitment to environmental, cultural, and social sustainability, core values of the family that owns the group. The resort works with the Maldives Marine Research Center to monitor manta rays and sea turtles and analyze the presence of debris in the ocean. It also promotes a reef replenishment program, offering guests the opportunity to participate as sponsors and follow the progress online.

A stay at COMO Cocoa is more than a vacation: it is a unique experience of responsible luxury, wellness, and connection to the pristine nature of the Maldives.
