Hwange Elephant Water Supply Project

Africa | Zimbabwe | Hwange

During the dry season, Hwange’s water resources are limitated, so 14 pumps within 523km² concessions must be maintained and refuelled daily to ensure a vital water supply for Hwange’s wildlife. They run continuously from April to Novembre until the summer rains arrive. Elephant water need is a major task because about 70 000 litres of water per pump per 24 hours are necessary. Old diesel-run generators are replaced with solar pumps in order to reduce carbon footprint.

Wilderness Little Makalolo

Little Makalolo lies in one of the best game viewing areas:  the Hwange National Park ensuring a great variety and numbers of animals year round.  Overlooking a vibrant waterhole, the small camp offers wildlife activity even from the pool or having breakfast and it is the right solution for guests who enjoy privacy and the sense of remoteness . The six traditional-style tents, including a family unit, are spacious and en-suite, with indoor and outdoor showers. They are connected to the main area by teak walkways, where a towering false mopane tree shades a separate dining and living area. An open fire deck offert convivial evening under the stars. The pool deck shelters the bar and breakfast ‘room’ with evocative views of the much-frequented waterhole in front of camp. Solar power is used for tent lights and to heat water, ensuring a lighter environmental footprint. Game drives, walks and cultural activities are available for guests.
