BIOSPHERE CONSERVATION

Hwange Elephant Water Supply Project

Africa | Zimbabwe | Hwange

During the dry season, water supplies in Hwange National Park are severely limited. To ensure the survival of the various species that inhabit this area, 14 pumps have been installed on the 523 km² of the concession, providing the necessary water daily. These pumps operate continuously from April to November, until the first summer rains arrive.

Meeting the elephants' water needs is particularly challenging: each pump must deliver more than 70,000 litres of water per day. To reduce the environmental impact, the old diesel-powered pumps will be gradually replaced with more modern models that harness solar energy. This not only improves operational efficiency, but also contributes to wildlife conservation efforts in this valuable area.

Wilderness Little Makalolo is in the heart of Hwange National Park, one of the best safari destinations in Zimbabwe. This park, renowned for its abundance of wildlife and numerous waterholes, guarantees spectacular sightings throughout the year. One of the waterholes is located right in front of the camp, allowing guests to observe elephant, buffalo, zebra and many other species watering up close without even leaving the lodge. Common areas, such as the restaurant and lounge, offer panoramic views of the waterhole, giving guests the opportunity to witness magical moments of animal interaction at all times of the day.

The lodge has only six exclusive tents, tastefully furnished and equipped with all modern amenities to ensure a luxurious, immersive experience in nature. The tents are connected by wooden walkways to the central area, which houses the restaurant, a fine bar, and a swimming pool where guests can relax after a day of exploring. The staff at Wilderness Little Makalolo is highly attentive and customizes every aspect of the stay to ensure that each guest has an unforgettable experience. At sunset, you can gather around the campfire for an aperitif or enjoy a delicious brunch overlooking the waterhole.

Activities include dawn and dusk safaris, led by experienced rangers, which offer the chance to observe local wildlife while respecting the environment. In addition, the lodge organizes visits to surrounding villages, allowing guests to discover the local culture and interact with local communities. Wilderness Little Makalolo places great emphasis on environmental sustainability, allowing travellers to experience a responsible safari, in harmony with the local nature and culture.
