DNA Crocodile Research

Africa | Namibia | Kunene

Serra Cafema Camp is supporting two important research programmes: the first aims to estimate the crocodile population of Kunene, while the second is a joint DNA project between Wilderness Safaris, the University of Stellenbosch and the Namibian Ministry of Environment and Tourism. Its purpose is looking at the genetics of the Nile crocodiles across Namibia, from the Kunene to the Zambezi.

Serra Cafema is located in the extreme north-west of Namibia, on the banks of the Kunene River in the Hartmann Valley. Serra Cafema is an intimate and peaceful lodge with a unique mix of rustic and luxury elements nestled amongst shady Albida trees. Rapids just below the lodge provide a calming ambiance with guests often lulled into dreamland by the gurgling waters after a hard day exploring one of the driest and starkest regions in the world. Accommodation consists of 8 riverside Meru-style chalets on spacious and elevated decks blended craftily into the picturesque surroundings that celebrates the culture of the Himba people. Each fully furnished chalet features an en-suite bathroom, ceiling fan and mosquito nets as well as bug repellent. A Serra Cafema must: a late afternoon spent lounging in the hammock soaking up the breathtaking vistas of this incredible land overlooking the Kunene River. Serra Cafema has fully inclusive rates that are not just about its level of luxury, but they encompass elements that cannot be counted or measured, such as exclusive access to vast tracts of Africa’s best wildlife areas, creating a unique sense of seclusion, comfort, privacy and space. Visitors presence helps the conservation of all these areas.
