Aluminum, due to its insulating properties against heat and cold, was a key element in the construction of Baines' Camp. As many as 150,000 recycled cans were used for the project, stacked, covered with nets and fabrics, and cemented with elephant dung to meet sustainability criteria from the structure's inception.
The cans were collected with the support of the community in the nearby village of Maun, which was involved in an initiative to promote recycling. In fact, the residents contributed by collecting cans in exchange for financial compensation, a gesture that generated not only an increase in local resources, but also increased awareness of the importance of reusing materials. This project demonstrated how sustainable practices can be combined with improved community well-being and the creation of innovative, environmentally friendly facilities.
Baines' Camp, named after the famous 19th century explorer Thomas Baines, is located on the banks of the Boro River, in a private reserve adjacent to the Moremi Game Reserve, in the heart of the Okavango Delta. This unique ecosystem, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is traversed by the fourth longest watercourse in Africa and boasts extraordinary biodiversity. Here, guests can spot lions, elephants, leopards, hippos and many other species on exciting walking and jeep safaris. The adventures continue with excursions by mokoro, the traditional African canoe, motor boat or spectacular helicopter flights over pristine landscapes.
