A mosaic of ecosystems

BIOSPHERE CONSERVATION

Project description

The Riserva Naturale Orientata Torre Salsa (so called for the ancient watchtower) is a protected area extended on 760 hectares running along the sea for almost 7 km. Established in 2000, it is a natural oasis managed and cared for by the WWF, known for its landscape heritage and its biodiversity. Primigenial flora and fauna and morphological beauty of its territory are reflected in a varied mosaic of different landscapes enclosing precious ecosystems. The hinterland characterized by natural terraces is framed by the wild mountainous areas of Monte Stella and a coastline interrupted by walls of marl and cliffs overlooking the turquoise sea. The scenic lanscape is enriched by a great variety of endemic botanical species including over 20 types of wild orchids and the sea lily. Porcupines, foxes, peregrine falcons, lizards, butterflies, gulls, herons and many other species of aquatic birds populate these uncontaminated habitats, but the Caretta caretta sea are the true protagonists, since they represent one of the most distinctive elements of this precious part of the Sicilian coast.
