Ladakh, the northernmost strip of India, is a high-altitude desert where a population of monks and shepherds pass down ancient spiritual and cultural traditions. Ladakh keeps intact the Tibetan Buddhism that the Chinese are trying to dismantle in Tibet. This trip visits the real Ladakh Valley that winds along the upper reaches of the Indus and that of Nubra, which can be reached via the highest carriage road in the world (Kardung La pass, 5359 m) and is crossed by rivers Shyok and Nubra. Wonderful monasteries, clinging to the steep sides of the mountains, house communities of hundreds of monks; Bactria's camels roam on the sand dunes of the valley floor; bright glaciers stand out on the horizon and high-altitude lakes dot the landscape.
